Redbud: Heart-Shaped Leaves and a Springtime Glow
Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis)
The Eastern Redbud is a small, ornamental tree that puts on a spectacular display from early spring through fall. Known for its vibrant lavender-pink blossoms, it lights up gardens and landscapes just as winter begins to fade. Despite its name, the tree’s blooms are a striking pink, but it’s named for the deep reddish buds that appear before the flowers or leaves emerge.
In early spring, its branches are lined with clusters of bright blooms—even before the leaves arrive. Once flowering concludes, the tree reveals its signature heart-shaped green leaves with smooth edges, adding a touch of softness to its structure. In autumn, the leaves turn yellow and drop, marking the seasonal cycle.
Redbuds prefer well-drained soil and are fairly low-maintenance, though they can be susceptible to canker, verticillium wilt, and other diseases. With proper care, a healthy Redbud can live 50 to 70 years, making it a lasting highlight in any landscape.
This charming native tree is perfect for small spaces and adds year-round beauty with its flowers, foliage, and elegant form.
